Campus Universitario Sustentable

Luego de la visita que realizara hace unos meses el señor Rector de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ing. Jaime Calderón S., a Oak Ridge (ORL por sus siglas en Inglés), se renovaron los acuerdos entre los que se que plantea una colaboración de los investigadores de ORLN a la EPN, específicamente en la revisión y acompañamiento del Plan de Campus Ambientalmente Sustentable para la EPN, preparado por el Arq. Diego Carrión, Asesor de la EPN-TECH EP.

 Con base en estos acuerdos de colaboración, uno de sus investigadores, Profesor Herbert Debban, ha sido invitado a participar como ponente en la EPN en el marco de la Conferencia Hábitat III, durante la cual también asesorará a la EPN en el referido proyecto, ya que posee vasta experiencia en la planificación de campus universitarios ambientalmente sostenibles, con trabajos en varios países del mundo.

Con la participación especial de Herbert Debban quien dictará una conferencia magistral como parte del programa de actividades académicas que organiza la EPN en el marco de la Conferencia Hábitat III.

Herb L. Debban

Herb Debban fue uno de los miembros fundadores del Equipo de Liderazgo de la UT-Battelle y ha trabajado en el Laboratorio Nacional Oak Ridge (ORNL) desde enero de 2000. Ha sido el ejecutor en definir el curso para las mejoras de modernización, operación y sostenibilidad de dichos laboratorios. Actualmente, el doctor Debban está semi-retirado pero se mantiene profundamente involucrado en las mejoras operativas y de sostenibilidad, aplicando su experiencia en el apoyo a la agenda de los laboratorios de la universidad e internacionalmente a otras instituciones educativas. Ha apoyado en actividades de sostenibilidad y modernización de ciudades en los EE.UU, Malasia, India, Qatar y Arabia Saudita.

 Entre sus funciones claves se puede mencionar: 

  • Vicepresidente y Director de la Dirección de Instalaciones y Operaciones en el Laboratorio Nacional Oak Ridge (ORNL) en Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

  • Responsable de las principales actividades de apoyo, incluyendo el desarrollo de instalaciones, ingeniería, gestión de instalaciones, operaciones, servicios logísticos, servicios públicos y funciones de protección del laboratorio.

  • Lideró el proceso de modernización del ORNL por USD 740 millones, que ha construido más de 111.500 m2 de nuevas instalaciones y la nueva infraestructura de apoyo, así como el desmontado 167.300 m2 de instalaciones.

  • El aumento de la productividad general en un 74%, así como la reducción de las lesiones en un 90%; y, el aumento en la  satisfacción del cliente, estimada en un 94%.

  • El doctor Debban ha recibido numerosos premios en los Estados Unidos, entre ellos de la Secretaría de Energía y el Premio “White House Closing the Circle”

Sustainable university campus

A few months ago, the Rector of the National Polytechnic School, Ing. Jaime Calderon S. visited Oak Ridge (ORNL for its acronym in English). In such occasion, agreements were renewed for collaboration of ORNL researchers to EPN, among other things in the review and follow-up of the Plan for Environmental Sustainability of the EPN Campus, prepared by Arch. Diego Carrión, Advisor to the EPN-TECH EP.

Based on these agreements, one of its researchers, Professor Herbert Debban, has been invited as a speaker at the EPN in the framework of Habitat III Conference, during which he will also advise the EPN in the aforementioned project. Professor Debban has extensive experience in planning sustainable environmental campus, with works in several countries.

 Brief Bio

Herb L. Debban

Herb Debban was one of the original UT-Battelle Leadership Team and has been at ORNL since January of 2000.  He has been instrumental in setting the course for the labs modernization, operational and sustainability improvements.  Herb is now semi-retired but remains keenly involved in operational and sustainability improvements and applying his experience in support of the Lab’s agenda here and internationally. He has supported sustainability and modernization activities in the US, Malaysia, India, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Key functions have included:

  • Vice President and Director of the Facilities and Operations Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

  • Responsible for major support activities including facility development, engineering, facility management, operations, logistical services, utilities, and the laboratory protection functions.

  • He led a $740M modernization effort that has constructed over 1,200,000 square feet of new facilities and new supporting infrastructure and vacated 1,800,000
    quare feet of facilities.

  • Overall productivity has increased 74 percent, injuries have been reduced 90 percent and customer satisfaction has risen to 94 percent.

  • Herb is proud of the Laboratory sustainability efforts that have received numerous national awards including from the Secretary of Energy and the White House Closing the Circle Award.

  • Herb has a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Washington and an engineering degree from the University of North Dakota.  He is a registered professional engineer.
